One of the most effective, and little-used, email reduction techniques is patience. Most of the time, a single daily or weekly status report that summarizes recent decisions and actions can replace tens or even hundreds of email messages sent and received.  This status report email can be saved as a draft, added to over time and sent when the stockpiled questions and updates reach a critical mass.  If everything in your work feels urgent and worthy of its own, in-the-moment, email, you may want to consult with your boss or colleagues to find out if your perceptions of what constitutes an emergency match their beliefs.
